Semi-Friends Only

I've officially decided to change this journal to semi-friends only. My stories will still be open to all who want to read them, but everything else is going to be locked.

Feel free to friend me if you wish, even if you are only here for the fics. I like people. <3

Fairy Cake Recipe

Whoa, I went away for a while and everything on LJ changed. o_O

Anyway, to the point. I promised on Twitter that I'd post my fairy cake recipe so here we go. Fairy cake is like a dense, berry version of a cupcake. I find it's an AMAZING tea snack, especially chilled.

My version is obviously gluten and dairy free. You can use regular if you want. To make them star shaped, I have 2 silicon star-shaped baking molds.

1 1/4c gf all-purpose flour
1/2c (dairy free) butter
3/4c of sugar (I use organic evaporated cane juice)
1 large lemon
1 tbl vanilla extract
2 eggs
Powdered sugar and star sprinkles

1. Pre-heat oven to 350F
2. Add butter, sugar, and vanilla extract - mix
3. Add 1 egg and 1 tbl of flour.
a. Mix until well incorporated. Add more flour if mix starts separating
4. Repeat 3-3.a.
5. Grate the rind off the lemon & add to the bowl. Mix well.
6. Add the rest of the flour and fold until incorporated.
7. Cut lemon in half and add juice of half to the bowl. Mix well.
8. Add berry of choice. Mix.
9. Pour into greased baking molds. Cook for 20-30 minutes.

Place on a cooling rack – do not remove from the molds until fully cool otherwise they will break apart. This is when the silicone mold comes in handy: you just pop the bottom up and they slide right out.

Juice the other half of the lemon and add to a small bowl. Incorporate powdered sugar into until you have a runny consistency. Drizzle over the fairy cakes and add sprinkles. Put in refrigerator while the glaze soaks in.

What's an anomaly? Me being on LJ right now

Life in Houston is finally settling into a pattern. I think I'm getting into the groove, not so tired and wanting to be social online again. I'm not going to lie. I disappeared from the Internet for a reason for a while there. I got so overwhelmingly frustrated with the SJW crap all over Twitter and Tumblr and creeping into all aspects of fandom that I just flat out went "Nope. I'm done. I can't take the crazy."

I left my friends because I got overwhelmed by everything that was creeping into fandom, and for that I am sorry.

I've made a decision now to get back onto LJ for nothing more than the friends still on here and keeping an eye out for fic that looks decent. I will not be getting back into active fandom life, because I quite simply don't like the direction that it has turned. I'm too old for the drama and can't stand the OMG YOU ARE TRIGGERING ME WITH THE WORD BLUE (yes, I did see that at one point) bullshit. Hopefully fandom leaves this stage soon, like it has left every stage in the past. If that happens, let me know and I may come back. Until then, no fandom for me.

Chekov has grown into a tall, well built gentleman.

cut scaled

Zorro had an allergic reaction to Texas, but is loving it otherwise. Except for a case of scratches that I *cannot get to go away*. He now has an Australian bridle.

Chekov and I actually got attacked by a dog at the end of July. A boar hunting dog went after Chekov, and I got him out of the way and stuck my hand between them to save my little monster. I got dragged, and my hand was badly mauled. The scarring is not pretty, and I might not get full motion or be painfree ever again. Plus, it's made me very wary of bigger dogs which I NEVER thought I'd be.

The good news is my library job is AMAZING. I run a program called Pokemon Gym where we connect our cartridges to the Wii and battle each other for a couple hours. The kids love seeing the Pokemon they've raised on the big screen. I've been declared the head of staff technical training, am working with technical services on a million projects, and pioneered a tech librarian call system so that any of the floor staff can call my team when they get overwhelmed by a tech question. I got a standing ovation in thanks at yesterday's meeting because we've had so many customer compliments and made life so much easier on the staff in the two months since I put it together. My supervisor has no idea how I do everything I do, and some of the reference staff have dubbed me a superhero. It's nice to be at a job where people actually appreciate me.

I'm excited to be back and am really hoping people are still on here. Cause I miss you guys <3

As of tomorrow, no more subject lines in comments on LJ

I was gonna update this with much happier stuff, but for the past week I've just been so enraged with LJ's asshattery that I've had it to here.

In case you didn't know, on 12/12 they first announced sneakily on the Russian journal of LJ's design guy that with new changes being implemented tomorrow, there will be no more subject lines in comments and that this change was "non-negotiable" (good round-up and translation here). I'm sure you all realize that this will basically make fandom and RP communities unusable. LJ's staff, however, doesn't give a shit. At least 18 pages of 100% negative feedback didn't sway them.

They've backpedaled some and will make keeping comment subject lines optional in some S2 styles, but the default (that 99% of communities are running right now) will decidedly be subject-less! Not to mention that their new and frankly, fucking ugly design will take forever to load and make the site a pain to use on mobile browsers.

And oh, it looks like they might be taking away the drop-down menu to select icons as well, so you'll have to load all your icons as pictures to select them. Lovely. (I will beta-test tonight to see if this is actually true.)

Really, I don't know why I'm surprised. LJ is always fucking with the parts of the site that actually work and breaking them, so this is just another instance of that. Because seriously, who are subject lines hurting by just being there? (And no, it can't be a matter of server strain, considering the new "graphic" interface will definitely be using up more resources - so much fun when there's DDoS attacks!)
As far as I know, they've never once listened to their customers, so those thousands of comments already posted probably won't do shit. I've left a message expressing my concerns about the new comment pages here anyway; so if you want to do that too, go for it! If anything, it helps with the rage. ;)

FYI: Dreamwidth is feeling Christmasy has reacted to LJ's bullshit and has open account creation (no invite codes needed) for the rest of the week. Might be a good idea to get your back-up or new home, whatever the case may be, up and running now.

To sum up, in my own ( [personal profile] neotoma) words: as of tomorrow, no more subject lines for comment in S1 styles at all, possibly some subject lines in S2 if you know to do it, and no more drop-down menu for icons.

So yeah SPN

What about it?
I stopped watching
Going for the irony factor. It will be The End no matter what they do. There's no circumventing fate.
Ugh The End conspiracy theorists drive me nuts
I don't under that reference.

A thought just occurred to me

If anyone can guess or tell me the answer to this question I'd greatly appreciate it.

How does Logan bend his wrists with the bone claws then metal residing there?

*blinkblinkstare* How did this thought never occur to me before?

Fic Formatting, Complete With HTML Instructions

I wrote this on Tumblr but I'm posting it on here, as well. It will never be friend locked, so go right ahead and share it as you wish wherever you wish (excluding places like Facebook, please. respect my anonymity <3).

Dear Livejournal Users,

I know you're proud of your fic, but if you want people to read it or you're wondering why you have no comments, for the love of GOD, learn how to format properly. I, for one, will glance at it and immediately close the window. I really don't care how interesting the summary looks. I simply don't have the time to put it into a Word document and format it so it doesn't hurt my brain or eyes. There's too much else to read out there.

Get the word out! There are many out there that need to see this. Many stories I would like to read, if only!

Some Simple Rules to Follow

The Enter button exists for a reason; that is, to make it so your story doesn't just look like a wall of text on my screen.

In opposite world, do not over USE said Enter button. This is not a school report. Please, don't double-space it or hit Enter five times between paragraphs.

"Also, it's helpful if you learn how to present dialog properly," she said with slight exasperation.

Author: This is not how dialog is written except in plays and screenplays.

While this is a good way to distinguish thoughts, it is not an acceptable way to separate casual dialog from narratives. She said.

Language is a wonderful, more distinguished way to express emotions rather than overusing punctuation. Of the following, what looks better and more likely to be found in the big name, highly rec'd stories:

1. "Jamie...someone new is going to start writing!!!!"

2. "Jamie." Here Karen paused for dramatic effect. Before her friend could say anything, however, she rushed on, nearly tripping over her words in excitement. "Someone new is going to start writing!"

Your text should be in a commonly accepted font, not like papyrus or comic sans, and in a deeply contrasting color from the background. This is so that users do not get eyestrain trying read it. There's a reason that the fic sites, such as, use black on white in TNR. It's one of the easiest to read. On a related note, size 12 font or 14 font, please.

If you want the rest of your journal to be "fun colors and font", then simply make it so that your lj cuts (side-note: < lj-cut text = "Insert witty cut comment here" > and at the end of your fic type < / lj-cut > removing the spaces in order to get proper html formatting) take users to the white page background. To do so:

Go to Journal Style on your Settings page > Customize Your Theme > Disable Customized Comment Pages For Your Journal > Dropdown Menu: Yes > Save

One last thing! Please tag your fic entries. Preferably with series or story titles and pairings, but simply "fic" would work if you won't write much. If you have a multi-part story, it's REALLY essential that you make it easy for readers to find the next part, either with tags or "next" links at the bottom linking readers to the next chapter. If you're an advanced user/writer, you might look into creating a date out of order master fic post.

Wow, this turned out longer than I thought. Follow these simple rules, and I can guarantee you will get more readers and comments.

A Concerned Reader

Post-Script: If you would like to learn how to do or format something not mentioned in this post, please feel free to ask in the comments. I'd be happy to help.

In the Kitchen Again Because I Was Angry & It Helps

So I took this recipe for gluten-free Irish Oatmeal soup and adapted it to suit my needs. I thought it used way too much butter and the thought of oats in my soup made me cringe, so things had to change. Since I removed the oats it's no longer oatmeal, so I call it Irish Veggie Stew haha

2 tbl butter (or butter substitute which is what I used)
1.5-2 cups peeled, diced potato (I used red potato but any would work)
1/2 cup diced sweet onion
1-1.5 cup chopped mushroom
2 cups chopped fresh spinach
4 cups gluten-free chicken stock
1/4 tsp ground clove OR allspice (I used allspice)
Salt and pepper to taste

I left the mushroom and the potato in large cubes because I like my soup chunky, you can slice and dice to your heart's content. Some people apparently like the puree the soup to mush. Blech.

Melt butter in a stockpot over medium heat. Add potatoes, onions and mushroom and cook until vegetables are soft but not mushy. This is mostly applicable to the mushrooms. Don't worry about the potatoes, those will soften as the soup simmers.

Add chopped fresh spinach, cloves/allspice, and chicken stock. Simmer for about 20 minutes. Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper.

Stir in 1/4 cup of milk, half/half, or milk substitute at the end.
